Description: School buildings play an important role in ensuring the quality of teaching, and should foster a conducive environment for learning and teaching. Children are particularly sensitive to their thermal environment. Because of their particular physiology, they tend to be more vulnerable than adults to temperature extremes. Indoor air quality, energy efficiency and thermal comfort conditions are the three main aspects that affect the building interior. As they do not usually make use of air-conditioning, schools are dependent on passive design to address the abovementioned three aspects. Because of this, climatic responsive design principles are imperative for creating a comfortable environment using passive techniques. The aim of this study is comparing the passive thermal performance of two primary schools erected by means of steel frame construction and masonry construction, by using the exterior environmental variables (temperature) and the effect thereof on the building's interior (exterior versus interior temperature). The buildings' interiors will be further compared to determine which construction type provides acceptable thermal comfort (temperature and relative humidity variation). Two primary schools in the Mamelodi suburb of Pretoria have been identified as case studies for the research. The building contractors for the first school (Case study 1), Meetse-a-Bophelo, implemented the construction method which uses steel portal frames with composite in-fill panels. The second school (Case study 2), Legora Primary, is a standardised Gauteng Department of Education school, erected using conventional masonry construction.
