Abstract
The South African National Accreditation System (SANAS) is a schedule 3(A), Public entity, and is the sole accreditation body in laboratories in South Africa. Although SANAS is a flat structure with limited career opportunities, the organisation is growing rapidly and career development needs to be reviewed. Career development should be regarded as the shared responsibility of employees and employers to improve employees’ knowledge, skills and abilities. Factors influencing career development of administrative employees in SANAS are a major concern for both employers and employees. The primary objective of the study was to determine whether career development is taken into consideration with regard to administrative employees’ future within SANAS. The research methodology adopted for this study was a qualitative approach. The research was a case study and applied, exploratory and non -experimental research were used. The researcher made use of structured interviews. Content data analysis identified themes obtained from data gathering. The research findings confirmed that factors such as open communication, job rotation, leadership styles, career training, employee motivation, job satisfaction, financial constraints and performance appraisals had an influence on career development of administrative employees within SANAS. The study concluded that career development is relevant, significant and important to administrative employees at SANAS and should be recognised and managed effectively to ensure that SANAS retains knowledgeable, skilled and qualified administrative employees.
