Abstract
Globally, most developing countries’ economic structure is strongly linked to, and composed of, agriculture and agro-related sectoral activities. Agriculture is structured as a portfolio of investments aimed at boosting job creation and poverty alleviation and serves as a catalyst for economic growth and development. Unlike in the past, for agriculture to achieve the abovementioned objectives, there must be new ways of thinking and practice; this demands innovation and tacit knowledge application. African countries and other developing countries around the globe have been trailing behind developed countries in terms of research and development, innovation and other developmental scientific endeavours. Innovation systems that are tailored to, and contextualised for, developing countries must be emphasised. These range from primary production to tertiary production, fully utilising the factors of production - labour, land, capital and entrepreneurship. Drawing from literature and insights from experts and scholars at Globelics seminars on innovation systems hosted by the Institute for Economic Research on Innovation (IERI), this study explores how innovation systems - national systems of innovation (NSI), sectoral systems of innovation (SSI) and agricultural systems of innovation - can be used as a tool by developing countries to create jobs, foster economic growth, and alleviate poverty through agriculture and agro-processing. The final conclusions point at better ways to apply innovation systems in developing countries and outline policy recommendations for governments, mainly local governments at grassroots level.
