Abstract
The concept of Domestic installation and wiring continues to be a concern in the secondary schools in Johannesburg central district schools. Learners come to Grades 11 and 12 with signs of inadequate knowledge that emanate from Grade 10 domestic installation and wiring concept. Electrical Technology teachers should embrace practical skills and application of scientific principles in their teaching to produce competent learners who are equipped with practical skills that could be suitable for meeting the economic demands and trade industries. Electrical Technology teachers should be well equipped in preparing and teaching lessons that promote undoubtedly marketable skills that learners may use in contributing to this demand economy. The purpose of this study was to investigate Grade 10 teachers challenges in Domestic installation and wiring at Johannesburg Central Technical Schools in South Africa. This study used a qualitative approach which involved six teachers who teach Electrical Technology. The teachers were selected to take part in the study. The Pedagogical Content Knowledge notion of Lee Shulman was used as a theoretical framework to underpin the study. Data was collected using face to face interviews with the teachers as well as classroom observation when they taught domestic installation and wiring concept. Data was analyzed using verbatim quotes for face-to-face interviews and descriptively for classroom observation. Findings of the study revealed that teachers are being let down by lack of resources as well as being inadequately trained. The study recommends that more resources be sought so that teachers can fully teach practical components with ease and with confidence. The study also suggests that in-service training be organized often for teachers attaining an adequate level of performance in the domestic installation and wiring concept.
