Abstract
IsiZulu is the most widely spoken language in South Africa, and most of its home language (HL) speakers reside in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). Outside this province, there are significant isiZulu HL speakers who reside in Mpumalanga (MP) and Gauteng (GP). Anecdotal evidence suggests that isiZulu HL speakers are usually reluctant to learn other Black South African languages (BSALs) even when they relocate to areas where such languages are predominantly spoken. The purpose of this study was to explore the thoughts of isiZulu HL speakers on their language as it relates to identity and power. The study further looked at the attitudes held by isiZulu HL students towards their language and other BSALs. The study utilised both qualitative and quantitative approaches. A sample of 60 isiZulu HL speakers was were selected from university students studying the language at first- to third-year levels. Data were gathered through a questionnaire and face-to-face interviews.
