Abstract
At the centre of the messages and information disseminated to the public, there is language. This study investigated the role played by language when health awareness campaigns are planned by the Department of Health (DoH) in South Africa. Data were collected, using 115 (questionnaires) and 18 (interviews), from Pretoria clinic patients/visitors. The study, thus, tried to find out if a representative sample of the Pretoria community are satisfied that they received public health awareness information in their languages, and that the DoH, is, thereby, adhering to the national language policy, in content and in spirit. Based on its findings, the study recommends that the DoH and the media need to reinforce their efforts to honour the language policy of South Africa, for the benefit of society, by making public health awareness campaigns more effective to achieve public health improvement.
