Abstract
The objective of the research was to determine if there are indeed distinct differences in the primarily non-verbal and verbal behavior of offenders and non-offenders. The researcher, along with a research team, interviewed 15 offenders who are currently incarcerated at Pretoria Correctional Services. In order to determine if there were differences in their non-verbal behavior, the research team also interviewed 15 non-offenders. The non-verbal behavior of both groups was recorded on two separate checklists. One checklist measured the specific non-verbal body movements of the participant and the frequency in which these occurred during the interview. The other checklist measured the specific facial actions of the participant and the frequency in which these occurred during the interview. After analysis of research data, it was concluded that there were indeed distinct differences in the non-verbal behavior of offenders and non-offenders. The main recommendations aim to create awareness of the different non-verbal behaviour between offenders and non-offenders and create sensitivity towards these differences. The recommendations also suggest that offenders be involved to a greater extent in community projects in order to promote the rehabilitation process and eventual reintegration into society.
