Abstract
Effective performance management systems and practices promote good corporate governance in organisations and desirable organisational performance. Trust, compliance, fairness and good faith should therefore also be integrated values in all types of performance management practices in organisations. An investigation into employee perceptions on the trustworthiness of performance management systems and practices would therefore assist managers to establish the nature, strength and perceptions of employees in this regard. Such investigations can also generate important information for purposes of adapting performance management and employment relations policies, procedures and practices in organisations. The primary objective of this research study will be to investigate the nature, strength and direction of employee perceptions of the trustworthiness of performance management practices in the Menlyn Regional Office of the RAF. The secondary objectives are to investigate differences in perceptions of sample group members with different age, gender, union affiliation and length of service characteristics. There were very few statistically significant differences between the general perception scores of sample groups with different age, sex, qualification, and union membership characteristics. The only statistically significant difference existed between groups with different position characteristics. Perceptions of administrative staff (n = 37, 𝒙̅ = 61.79) were much less positive than the perceptions of managers and supervisors (n = 14, 𝒙̅ = 61.79) and technical specialists (n = 11, 𝒙̅ = 61.79). The mean perception score (n = 62, 𝒙̅ = 53.39) was also considerably higher than the mean of administrative staff (n = 37, 𝒙̅ = 61.79), which strongly suggests that administrative staff members may be significantly less satisfied with performance management practices at the Road Accident Fund.
