Abstract
The main aim of this study was to construct a sustainable domestic tourism development framework for the Erongo Region of Namibia. The study employed an
adaptive convergent, parallel-designed mixed-methods research approach through a survey of domestic tourists and in-depth interviews with tourism suppliers in the study area. The quantitative part of this study found that domestic tourists seek relaxation, escapism, participatory experiences, and enriching experiences in their destination. The study also shows that factors such as destination attributes, events and activities, safety and familiarity, and a variety of experiences draw them in. However, affordability, limited infrastructure, and poor government policies inhibit the development of domestic tourism. The qualitative results indicate that the country's existing tourism policy framework does not specifically address domestic tourism. This part of the study further uncovers a need for capacity building at the government’s level. The study recommends that tourism planners and marketers tailor tourism offerings to the asserted domestic tourists’ motivations to induce more domestic tourism demand and consumption among domestic tourists. The study also suggests formulating a strategy
for domestic tourism growth, with a focus on planning and development. These recommendations are consolidated into a framework that could aid the study area and other developing economies with the sustainable development of domestic tourism.
