Abstract
The main purpose of the study was to validate a framework for talent management, transformational leadership and work engagement of artisans for the automotive industry in South Africa. The rationale of the research is based on identifying the current problem and relating transformational leadership with talent management and work engagement as variances influencing the variables that drive talent management of artisans and their work engagement in the automotive industry understudy. The industry employs in excess of 1045 participants (artisans only). A random sampling method was used to invite artisans to participate in the study. Tested questionnaires were used to collect data that was designed to answer specific questions which can be tested statistically. Cronbach’s alpha was used to determine internal reliability. The data received was coded and recorded using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Statistical analysis was conducted after applying descriptive statistics (Tables, percentages, mean and standard deviations) and inferential statistics (Factor analysis and Structural Equation Modelling). Existing research questionnaires will be used to gather data. To measure the variables (talent management, transformational leadership and work engagement) of this study, the following existing questionnaires was used: Talent Management, The Human Capital Index (van Hoek, 2014), Transformational Leadership, the Multi Factor Leadership questionnaire (MLQ) of Bass and Avolio (Bass & Avolio, 2000), and Work Engagement, the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale of Schaufeli (Schaufeli, Bakker & Salanova, 2006:714). The completed questionnaires were put into research boxes in order to ensure confidentiality. Fieldworkers were used to assist with data collection. Previous research has tested the questionnaires for reliability. Purposive sampling was used to target the 1045 maintenance artisans to complete this. A key outcome of the study is a validated framework focusing on the automotive industry in South Africa. The study contributes to the existing body of knowledge regarding human resources management, particularly in transformational leadership, talent management and work engagement.
