Abstract
Researches of mild steel coatings are relatively continuous due to the need to obtain optimum properties for its utilization in different environments. Zn-Ni-CeO2-Y2O3 alloy composite development shows a favorable solution in this research. A thin film of this formulation with varying concentration of yttrium oxide was plated on mild steel by electrodeposition technique. Scanning electron microscope was used to study the surface morphology after electrodeposition. Optical microscope was used to analyze the coatings after wear test which were carried out on a dry abrasive MTR-300 test rig. The microhardness of deposits was investigated by means of Vickers indenter. From the results, uniform deposits of Zn-Ni-CeO2-Y2O3 coatings were obtained which showed fine grains. The microhardness of the coatings increased significantly compared to the as-received sample, with more than 100HV being obtained for Zn-Ni-10CeO2-5Y2O3. The OPM of the wear scar and weight loss shows better results for Zn-Ni-10CeO2-5Y2O3.
