Abstract
Recent literature suggests that technology educators do not exhibit acceptable pedagogical capital. This notion came as a generic view as researchers were trying to understand how technology educators incorporate indigenous knowledge systems, creativity, critical thinking and entrepreneurial skills, among other things. However, these researchers failed to understand how day-to-day pedagogical practices affect educators’ content delivery in the context of teaching mechanical systems and control. It was upon this gap that this present study was instituted to explore the pedagogical practices of Grade 8 technology educators in teaching mechanical systems and control at Madibeng sub-district. This study was framed around Shulman's (1987) Pedagogical Content Knowledge as its theoretical framework. Through a qualitative research approach, a single case study design was employed, and non-participant observations, semi-structured interviews, document analysis and open-ended questionnaires were used. This study purposively sampled seven Grade 8 technology educators from the Madibeng sub-district. The findings of this study indicated that Grade 8 technology educators employ a variety of pedagogical practices which are often grounded in practical applications, scenario-based teaching and mostly dependent on textbook instructions. Based on the findings of the study, the recommendations are as follows: continuous engagement of educators' professional development in mechanical systems and control with an emphasis on increasing both content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge. The study also proposed a model of intervention which is the Integrated Support and Development Model (ISDM).
