Abstract
This dissertation examines the feasibility of the horror genre in South African feature films through a case study approach. The focus is on illuminating the steps that South African filmmakers can take to ensure the feasibility of their horror films. In-depth interviews were conducted with eight South African horror filmmakers in order to obtain valuable insights in this regard. The main research results indicate that producing a successful local horror film requires the filmmaker to come up with a unique concept and keep the budget as low as possible. This dissertation concludes with a recipe for success that future South African horror filmmakers can follow to produce successful films in this genre.
