Abstract
This study illuminates the importance of the awareness of dyslexia in one of the selected areas in Northwest Province. It aims to assess whether parents, educators and officials at the Department of Health and the Department of Basic Education are aware of what dyslexia is and whether they realise the extent to which it influences the learners’ ability to learn a language. The study attempts to bring to the fore the devastating consequences that manifest in learners’ lives and academic performance when educators, parents, health and educational authorities fail to pay attention. The setting includes three schools in Northwest Province at the two areas named Letlhakeng and Phokeng, one school being a school for learners with special needs. The research study adopted the mixed-methods approach for data collection, by using a questionnaire and interview as data collection instruments and employed the inductive approach to analyse the data collected. The sampled dyslexic learners indicated the need for dyslexia to be known and understood instead of being misinterpreted as being slow or stupid. The overall findings from officials at the health and education facilities as well as educators, parents and learners, revealed that dyslexia is still regarded as an unknown territory. However, it can be gathered that the respondents found it highly significant to have specialists coming to schools to assess learners in order for intervention to occur as early as possible to prevent major challenges in learners’ academic life. The recommendations of the study were such that parents need to be involved as much as possible in the day-to-day progress of the child and not to leave everything to the hands of the teacher. Also, the Department of Health together with the Department of Basic Education have to commence putting strategies in place to make dyslexia awareness campaigns part of the curriculum programme.
