Abstract
The research examined the utilisation of social networks in the public sector to promote the effectiveness and efficiency of the operational functions of administrators. This included greater understanding of the factors that influenced the utility of social networks in administrative environment in the South African public sector (government). The study was conducted in five (5) national government departments in South Africa. The analysis and interpretation of empirical data revealed that technological know-how, infrastructure, regulations and governance are critical to the successful adoption and utilisation of social network across government departments. Different methods, approaches and techniques were employed in achieving the objectives of the research. Triangulation of data collection methods was applied. A qualitative, interpretive case study research method was used. The interpretative approach and statistical analysis allowed the researcher to have a deeper sense making of the qualitative and quantitative data. From the study, it was found that, when it comes to social networking in the workplace, there is no one-size fits-all approach. The benefits of social networking platforms vary based on platform type, features and the organisation itself. Though technological services such as social networks can enhance the way tasks are carried out, not all administrative tasks can be performed using such platforms. However, those tasks that can be carried out by using social networks will enable the efficacy of administrators in their respective environments.
