Abstract
The Progress in International Literacy Study (PIRLS) 2011 Howie et al. (2012) rated Grade 4 reading literacy levels in South Africa as well below the international mean. The study indicated noticeable variance within the South African Grade 4 learners, with English and Afrikaans Grade 4 learners performing significantly above the international and Sepedi and Tshivenda learners performing significantly below the international mean. This study investigates reading levels among Grade 4 Sepedi Home Language learners at a school in Midrand. It offers a review of literature on reading and the teaching of reading, noticeably the reading and viewing outcomes stipulated by the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) (Department of Basic Education, 2011). Furthermore, it assesses reading speed (silent), reading comprehension and reading fluency, as well as perceptions of Grade 4 Sepedi Home Language teachers on the teaching of reading in their classes at the school. The study concludes that the standard of reading is well below what is required and that teachers need to be better resourced and trained in the teaching of reading in the vernacular.
