Teachers’ challenges in graphical communication in technology grade 8 class: A case of four selected schools in Johannesburg Central District 14.

Abstract
The purpose of the study was to investigate teacher’s challenges in Grade 8 Graphical communication concept. The study made use of a qualitative research approach to conduct. Purposive sampling was used to select four schools and four participants, one from each school in Johannesburg central District 14 schools to be part of the study. Schulman’s Pedagogical Content Knowledge notion was used as an underpinning framework for the study. The study made use of classroom observation and semi-structured interview to collect data. Pseudonyms were used to shield the image of the participants. The findings revealed that Technology Grade 8 lacks good PCK and their PK is not strong hence their continued challenges in the concept Graphical communication. It was also found that teacher’s attitude and perceptions in Graphical communication topic is the one that makes it to be a difficult topic to teach. The study also found that the Technology Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement document does not cater for Graphical Communication enough, in that, it is not fully dominating the concept of Graphical communication which makes teachers not to pay too much attention to it as a concept. This then makes learners to proceed to the Further Education and Training phase with limited knowledge that creates challenges for them to master Engineering Graphics and Design in Grades 10-12. There is a challenge with the use of the instruments from the teachers’ side which makes one to see Graphical communication as an unimportant concept because of continuing use of freehand sketches. The study recommends that an hour be added to Technology as a practical subject, and drawing models and instruments be bought for Graphical Communication. More methodology trainings be held for Graphical Communication teachers.
