Abstract
In response to the lack of research in the South African context, this study examines the relationship between graduates' perceived employability and their protean career attitudes at a South African bank, particularly within the dynamic banking sector marked by significant developments and emerging technologies. The study uses convenience sampling and a self-administered questionnaire to do a quantitative analysis with a sample size of 259 people (n = 259) graduates across 7 (n = 7) graduate programmes from the head office of the South African bank, covering the years 2019 to 2022. The empirical findings highlight a notable correlation between protean career attitudes and perceived employability. However, demographic variables exhibit no substantial correlation with various facets of protean career attitudes, except for gender, which significantly influences the value driven sub-factor. Interestingly, the study reveals no significant differences in employee perceptions across diverse biographical groups, particularly within the bank’s graduate programme and based on the commencement year within the graduate programme, underscoring the limited existing research on this subject. Furthermore, no significant correlation is identified regarding association between demographic groups and perceived employability, with prior work experience emerging as the most impactful factor. These insights provide valuable considerations for retail banks indicating potential future electronic channel improvements. Overall, the study makes a noteworthy contribution to understanding protean career attitudes and perceived employability within the South African banking sector, addressing a research gap and offering practical implications for both academia and industry.
