Abstract
This study strives to determine whether there is room for a possible change in curriculum in the field of Language Practice at the Tshwane University of Technology, as well as to find out what students’ attitudes are towards this course. Would they prefer to specialise in a particular language field or subject and do they feel subjects should be more practical rather than too theoretical? The researcher, being a former student himself, has found that most students are not aware of possible career opportunities that are available to them. Students also feel as if they are not sufficiently specialised when entering the working environment, as they feel they have had a smattering of everything, but not sufficient knowledge of one particular aspect. This study, however, does not aim to compile a new curriculum for the Language Practice course, but rather to gather information on how current and former students feel about a possible curriculum change. Should subjects be more practical and should internships be offered? Future studies can be done on re curriculation. The research methods in this study include a literature study as well as a questionnaire. New studies should be made available, and student awareness towards possible career opportunities should be worked on. The main recommendations are to look in more depth at the current curriculum, to have a larger practical component in the course and offer internships to keep students motivated. Lastly, students should specialise in selected subjects.
