Abstract
This study explores how using additive manufacturing solutions can enhance jewellery's design, productivity, and overall quality. CAD technology enables designers to create, print, and store designs on a computer screen for casting. The research aims to understand the approaches, perspectives and challenges Jewellery makers face using CAD/CAM solutions, which could be solved as fundamentals and addressed in WIL simulation at TUT. By thoroughly analysing existing technology, the study highlights the rapid advancements in the digital era and their impact on traditional handmade Jewellery design and production. It focuses on the utilisation of CAD software and CAM equipment among small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs) in the Jewellery sector within the Tshwane region where the study was based. The research sampled ten selected SMMEs in Tshwane that are currently adopting CAD/CAM solutions in their Jewellery businesses. Data was collected through interviews conducted in person. The interviews were recorded and transcribed to analyse the data. In order to validate and triangulate the findings from the Tshwane-based Jewellery industry participants, I produced Jewellery pieces using CAD technology, comparing the advantages of this approach with traditional handwork techniques. The findings reveal that the positive attitudes towards CAD adoption are influenced by accuracy and precise design that can be manipulated virtually. Furthermore, the benefits of CAD systems complement the existing manual design and manufacturing methods. However, due to the complexity of CAD processes, sufficient training and time are essential for local Jewellery designers to integrate these digital tools into their practice fully.
