The premise of the study was that for students to be able to identify mathematical concepts they must be able to read. When students are able to read then they are able to identify mathematical concepts in a newspaper article. The challenge of students who are unable to read and understand mathematical concepts in relation to number system is prevalent. For students to be able to read and understand mathematical concepts they must have the ability to read and understand the language associated with the mathematical concepts concerned. The study builds on from previous research related to the challenges faced by students in mathematics generally, and specifically, in relation to reading mathematically. However, previous work has shown that there is little research that has been undertaken to examine whether NCV students are able to identify mathematical concepts embedded in a newspaper article. This study aims to fill this gap by investigating and exploring the extent to which students are able to identify mathematical concepts in a newspaper article. The following questions guided the research study: To what Extent are NCV students able to identify words connected to number system in a newspaper article? And to what Extent are NCV students able to connect the identified words with a specific area in number system? The analysis in the findings shows different levels in abilities of students to identify and connect concepts covered in the newspaper article. There seems to be greater success in students identifying mathematical concepts in sections of the newspapers that contained number words. This study confirmed the usefulness of involving students in the activity of reading. The analysis shows that newspapers can be a great remedial tool if the approach is correctly used.1-99 PagesenCC0 1.0 Universalhttp://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/Newspaper articleMathematics in the news: A case study with National Certificate Vocational (NCV) level 2-4 students.Thesis
