Abstract
The need for improved performance and environmental friendliness of railcar during its manufacturing processes has occupied the front burner in recent times. This is because of the growing interest for environmental protection as well as the need to develop the railcar system in line with the best global practices. This study considers the comparative analysis of the life cycle assessment (LCA) for the assembly operations of the railcar components in order to evaluate the environmental impact of the assembly operations. Data which covers the material and energy usage as well as emission characteristics of the energy used were obtained from a primary source. The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) considered the Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) as well as the Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) during the assembly of the railcar lower brackets and bogie frame respectively.
