Abstract
Transformative agreement can be explained as those deals negotiated between universities, research institutions or consortia and publishers with the purpose of transforming the journal publishing model from subscription-based to open access. In these deals former subscription expenditures are repurposed to cover the costs of open access publishing. The movement was started by a group who called themselves ESAC (Efficiency and Standards for Article Charge) that includes community of library practitioners who collaborate to produce open resources. ESAC is coordinated by Max Planck Digital Library in Munich, Germany. In South Africa, these agreements were negotiated by SANLIC (South African National Library and Information Consortium) on behalf of South African institutions.
