Abstract
Institutional repositories are increasingly gaining significance in academic and research institutions as a means of knowledge production, knowledge distributing systems and expanding the visibility and impact of research. Open access institutional repositories as knowledge sharing systems have played a pivotal role in South African institutions of higher learning and research institutions over the past several years. Institutional repositories are digital depositories of web based scholarly cyber documents owned by institutions.
Globally, institutional repositories have become starting points of services offered in institutions of higher learning particularly in scholarly communication. Globally, a number of institutions are adopting institutional repositories to manage their cyber resources, allowing long term accessibility and visibility in order to cater for transitional needs of the present scholarly communication.
