Abstract
The study investigates factors influencing employee engagement and job satisfaction among administrative employees at the eMalahleni Local Municipality. In a rapidly evolving work environment, the issue of employee disengagement has become increasingly prominent, particularly within public sector settings such as municipalities. The study addresses a key research gap by focusing on administrative employees, whose engagement and satisfaction levels are crucial for organisational success. The research aims to understand the variables that influence these two critical constructs and assesses the extent to which they are present among employees at the municipality. Guided by the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model, the study explores how job demands, resources and personal factors contribute to employee engagement and job satisfaction. The study employed a quantitative research design. Data collection was conducted through a structured questionnaire distributed to 184 administrative employees, with descriptive and inferential statistical techniques, including factor analysis, used for data analysis. The results reveal moderate levels of employee engagement and job satisfaction, with leadership, learning and development opportunities and organisational support identified as key influencers. However, areas such as rewards and recognition systems, along with equitable workload distribution, emerged as critical points for improvement. The study recommends targeted interventions to enhance leadership effectiveness, increase opportunities for professional development and create a more supportive work environment. The findings underline the importance of a balanced approach to employee engagement and satisfaction, suggesting that improving these areas can lead to better overall performance and employee retention, which is in line with the JD-R model.
