Abstract
The current rating scale used for adjudicating indigenous folklore in the south african schools choral eisteddfod comprises performance outcomes with no coherent performance criteria and performance level descriptors. the purpose of this study was to explore adjudicators’ and choir conductors’ perceptions of problem areas inherent in the current indigenous folklore rating scale with a view to developing a reliable and valid rubric, for a fairly objective adjudication. a qualitative, phenomenological research design was chosen for this study of perceptions, using purposive non-probability sampling. participants were from the provinces of Gauteng and north west. textual data were collected through face-to-face interviews. analysis was done by breaking down larger units of the transcripts into manageable categories of positive, negative and fair perceptions. although in general, participants accepted the existence of the indigenous folklore rating scale, the adjudicators were concerned about its level of effectiveness in the adjudication process. the general perceptions were that the rating scale had inadequate content to enable accurate interpretation and consistency during adjudication; was unable to guide adjudicators to understand what the desired performance standards of indigenous folklore to be adjudicated were, and/or what they looked like; and was therefore unable to support trustworthy and objective results. some choir conductors had never seen the rating scale; some did not understand it and therefore had not received guidance from the scale except for adjudicators’ comments written on it.
